Now you can get a filling and a vampire facial.

If you avoid your dentist like the plague and would rather live with a sore tooth than go and get it sorted, dentists are now offering a host of facial treatments to get you in the door.

While you’re probably aware you can have your teeth whitened in the chair, you might be less aware that many also offer anti-wrinkle injections and skin rejuvenation treatments – making it not only easy and convenient – but safer too.

Why? Because unlike other practitioners offering such services, dentists have been specifically trained in the facial area, says Dr Myles Holt, founder of Australasian Academy of Dento-Facial Aesthetics.

“Dentists are not trying to perform new or radical procedures here. We are talking about procedures that are already performed by lesser-trained individuals across Australia every day,” he explains.

“What we are talking about is allowing patients to receive treatment from the most qualified and experienced health practitioners.”

Injectables aside though, many clinics are also offering lactic acid peels, vampire facials and micro-needling, as well as non-surgical thread lifts.

“The most beautiful smiles can’t be showcased to its greatest advantage if its `frame’, being the lips and overall texture of skin that drapes the face does not match,” Dr Ishara Goonewardene of Sydney’s Total Care Dentistry, explains.

“Even the subtlest improvements to a face and smile can make a dramatic difference to the way a person looks and feels.”

According to Dr Goonewardene, such treatments are just an extension to what they already do on a daily basis, with most patients combining cosmetic treatments with other procedures.

“We offer dermal fillers, non surgical skin tightening and lifting treatments and muscle relaxant injections to enhance lip shape and dimensions, soften fine lines around the mouth and use cosmeceutical products to improve overall skin texture. This is paired with composite resin bonding to correct chipped teeth, dental implants and crowns and veneers to cover and protect damaged or discoloured teeth.”

Although of course, it goes without saying, the potential risks associated with any kind of facial treatment need to be well considered before booking in and no matter where you go cost shouldn’t take a backseat to competence.
